Pale Rider is an American western from 1985. Clint Eastwood is the director , producer and lead actor . The film describes the fight of a small group of gold miners against an overpowering mine owner . The film opened in German cinemas on October 24, 1985.
action
A small group of traditionally working gold miners around the pious Hull Barret and his fiancée Sarah Wheeler are said to be forcibly evicted by henchmen of the mining industrialist Coy LaHood , who wants to excavate the entire area using industrial methods. Sarah's underage daughter Megan asks for a miracle in a prayer after such an attack.
The miracle appears in the form of a stranger on a pale ( English pale ,) horse, the Hull Barret comes to the rescue when he is beaten in the city of LaHood clubs. Barret takes the stranger back to his house, where he notices scarred gunshot wounds on his back. The stranger poses as a preacher to the pious people, but does not give a name, which is why he is only addressed as “preacher”. Under his influence, the gold miners gain new self-confidence.
Since LaHood is unable to dissuade the "preacher" from his support or to buy their claims from the gold miners , he threatens violence in the form of a notorious professional killer who calls himself Marshal Stockburn and is on the road with six cronies, his deputies .
When Megan confesses her love to the "preacher" one evening, he rejects her not unkindly, but firmly. Then she gets angry and insults the “preacher”, but she blames herself when he disappears the next morning.
One of the prospectors celebrates a big gold find in town. After provoking LaHood while he was drunk, he was provoked by the "Marshal" Stockburn and his "deputies" who had arrived in the meantime to draw his gun and then legally, in cold blood, shot him. In the meantime, the “preacher”, who has returned as a gunslinger, has just prevented Megan's rape by LaHood's son, whereupon Sarah also confesses her love to him, even though she is engaged to Hull. The “Marshal” calls the “Preacher” to a duel the next morning.
In the showdown , the “Preacher” first shoots LaHood's men and then fools Stockburn's “Deputies” in a sophisticated game of hide-and-seek to kill one after the other. Ultimately, only the two opponents remain. The "preacher" kills Stockburn, who seems to recognize him at that moment and whose body then has almost exactly the same gunshot wounds as the body of the "preacher". LaHood wants to shoot him from ambush, but is killed by Hull beforehand. Thereupon the "preacher" says goodbye to Hull and then rides away without turning around again.

Reviews
“Melancholic late-westerly who uses classic genre motifs for an 'ecological' criticism of the destruction of the environment. Exceptional in his political and metaphysical aspects, his plea against violence, his staging determined by realism and ritualization and in his excellent camera work. "
"Western epic charged with metaphors."
