J. Edgar is an American feature film by Clint Eastwood from the year 2011 . It is a biography of J. Edgar Hoover , the first director of the FBI . The film opened at the 25th AFI Fest 2011 in Los Angeles on November 3, 2011 and hit theaters in the United States on November 9, 2011. The film launch in Germany was on January 19, 2012.

action

The film shows in flashbacks the public and private life of one of the most controversial, powerful and enigmatic men of his time, J. Edgar Hoovers , the founder and longtime director of the FBI .

In the 1960s, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover dictated his memoirs. In 1919, Hoover was a member of the Justice Department and a subordinate of A. Mitchell Palmer . An anarchist bomb attack is carried out on them. Hoover sharply criticizes the police's educational work. As the head of a newly formed anti-radical unit, Hoover puts his dislike of anarchists, communists, and anyone he believes to be into action.

Influenced by his strictly religious mother, he hastily asks the secretary Helen Gandy for her hand. Although she refuses, he hires her as a personal assistant who has served as his right hand for decades. Hoover, who is publicly anti-gay, hires the athletic Clyde Tolson, with whom he spends daily meals and holidays together. He has a tragic homosexual relationship with him that has lasted for decades, but which must be kept secret from the public. With the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby in 1932, Hoover was able to finally expand the influence of his investigative office after spectacular successes. In the trial of the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby, the probably innocent, German-born Bruno Richard Hauptmann is sentenced to death. Hoover implements high requirements for qualifications for the FBI and promotes scientific criminalistic work. He is portrayed as someone who does not think much of civil rights and who is constantly working to increase his powers over civil liberties. He has a very tense relationship with the Kennedy brothers John and Robert . Relations with President Nixon are also very tense. In the 1960s he subordinates the civil rights movement to Martin Luther King, Jr. , to promote communism. He plans to initiate an illegal intrigue against him, but he does not put it into practice. After his death, Gandy destroys his secret archives so that they do not fall into Nixon's hands.

reception

The ongoing speculation about Hoover's sexual orientation also plays an important role in the film. This led to public discussions about Clint Eastwood's work in the United States.

Reviews

“At its core, J. Edgar is the story of someone who set out to lie to himself and who can't really look things in the eye until the end. A film about dying - Eastwood is now 81 years old, maybe that allows him to look with so much warmth and regret at a man who was never happy. "

“Without neglecting the historical facts, Clint Eastwood searches for the person behind the outer facade in this biography. Neither contempt nor admiration characterize his portrait, but rather a fascination for a colorful personality without giving a moral judgment. Excellent in staging and presentation. "

“In terms of content, J. EDGAR is a film from which one shouldn't expect too much, as it only recounts a few key events in the life of its main character and remains in the explanation for the actions of its protagonist in the context of typical explanatory patterns. He does everything very solidly and even if the nesting occasionally just doesn't get confused by a hair's eye, the complexity is what gives it a certain appeal. […] A masterpiece certainly looks different, but beyond all justified criticism, J. Edgar has turned out to be a pretty solid film whose best selling point is clearly Leonardo DiCaprio's brilliant performance. You can look at it, but you don't have to. "
