Kenneth Joseph Howard, Jr. (born March 28, 1944 in El Centro , California - † March 23, 2016 near Los Angeles , California) was an American actor and trade unionist .

Life

Ken Howard grew up in Manhasset , New York . After high school , he attended Amherst College and studied drama at Yale University . However, he dropped out of his studies in favor of an engagement in the Broadway production of Neil Simons Promises, Promises . From 1969 to 1972 he played Thomas Jefferson in a total of 1217 performances in 1776 . He received the Theater World Award in 1969 for his performance in Jefferson , and the following year he received the Tony Award for Child's Play . Howard continued to play regularly on Broadway until the mid-1970s, but also pursued a film and television career. In 1973, he starred alongside Blythe Danner in the sitcom Adams Kesse Rippe , which was based on the film Marriage War with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn . However, the series was discontinued after 13 episodes. The following year he played the lead role in the crime series The Manhunter , which was discontinued after the first season. Between 1978 and 1981 he starred in the two-time Emmy- nominated series The White Shadow .

In 1981 he received his first Emmy for his performance on the children's show The Body Human: Facts for Boys . From 1985 to 1986 he played Garrett Boydston in The Denver Clan and in the spin-off The Colbys - The Empire . In the 1990s he played in the blockbusters Das Kartell and Das Netz . He achieved greater fame in Germany through his portrayal of Max Cavanaugh , the father of forensic doctor Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh in the series Crossing Jordan - Pathologist with profile . In 2009 he received his second Emmy for Gray Gardens .

In 2009 he was elected President of the Screen Actors Guild . After its merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in 2012, Howard was most recently president of the new SAG-AFTRA union .

Ken Howard died shortly before his 72nd birthday on March 23, 2016 near Los Angeles.
