Crossing Jordan - pathologist with profile is the coroner concentrated crime series , which since September 24, 2001 by the American broadcaster NBC aired. The main actress is Jill Hennessy in the role of the quick-witted criminologist Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh. On May 16, 2007, the last episode of the series was broadcast in the United States.
In Germany, "Crossing Jordan" has been broadcast on VOX since April 15, 2003 ; the last episode of the series was on February 15, 2008. The series has already been completely repeated several times on the channels Vox , Tele 5 and Super RTL . It was also broadcast on the pay TV channel 13th Street Universal and on 3+ in Switzerland.

Jordan Cavanaugh returns to her hometown of Boston after years and asks her old boss, coroner Dr. Garret Macy to Get a Job; She once left the department in a dispute with her superiors because they no longer tolerated her constant interference in police investigations. Against his better judgment, Macy, after years of waiting, finally promoted to Chief Medical Examiner, the chief of forensic medicine, reinstates Jordan.
So Jordan meets her father Max again, with whom she has always had a complicated relationship; Once she found her stabbed mother in the kitchen of her parents' house at the age of 10. Max, a police officer himself at the time, was briefly arrested as a suspect and only with difficulty retained custody, although he was released. Later he taught his daughter a dangerous method of crime reconstruction: They put themselves in the shoes of the murderers and the victims and in the process often came dangerously close to them psychologically.
Now the two start again with these flashbacks, while Jordan doesn’t let go of the thought of their mother’s never found murderer.
After a while, Jordan receives more and more clues about her childhood, her family and the murder of her mother. But her father Max remains silent about his late wife. Even when Jordan finds out that she is not an only child but has an older, psychopathic brother named James, he makes no move to help her find the truth. He repeatedly avoids answering her questions on the subject by evading or telling her to leave the subject alone.
It turns out that her mother was mentally ill and had a brief stay in the mental hospital.
Before Jordan was born, Max had given James to a family who had previously lost their own child. This was never officially recorded. The reason he tells Jordan is that his mentally ill wife wanted to harm baby James. Jordan also remembers a childhood scene where she finds her mother in the bathroom with a broken mirror in her hand, which she concludes that she wanted to harm herself. However, Max's motives for passing on the baby James remain doubtful, as James alleges that he gave it away because James was not Max's biological son and he could not bear this.
It wasn't until the age of 10 that James learned the truth by chance and then left his birth parents.
Jordan also discovers that her mother was dating a former colleague of her father, Thomas Malden. So this is James' father. Thomas Malden found out the truth about his illegitimate son the day before Jordan's mother died and therefore wanted to have James killed. James was then forced to kill another police officer charged with killing him. Therefore he was then on the run and could not contact Jordan for many years.
At the end of the second season, many details come to light when Jordan finds a vehicle she had been looking for for a long time, for which she had received the name of the vehicle and the car key from a family murderer a year earlier.
In this vehicle, the bones of the policeman who was killed by James are discovered, so that both the police and Jordan independently search for James with different motives. At a meeting between Jordan and James in her apartment, she learns more details and thus finds out the truth about James' biological father, Thomas Malden.
In Thomas Malden's office, she confronts him, but is made compliant with a drug and anesthetized. Together with Jordan, he arrives in James' apartment, in which there is apparently a fight and Thomas Malden is shot by James.
Max, who has now learned the truth about Thomas Malden and James himself, also reaches the apartment and fires a shot at the already dead Thomas Malden in order to protect James, who is now on the run. Det. "Woody" Hoyt, because Max took his car keys with him while leaving, arrives late at this apartment and after hearing a few shots from the apartment in the stairwell, he finds Max with a fired weapon. In the final shot of the last episode in season 2, Max and Woody aim at each other with their guns.
In the following episode, Max is on the run because he is initially thought to be Thomas Malden's murderer. In the course of the episode, however, it turns out that James shot him. In addition, Woody initially considers Jordan to be the murderer and assumes that Max originally wanted to cover Jordan and help him escape.
In the meantime, she wakes up, still partially stunned by Thomas Malden, on the side street next to the apartment and meets Garret Macy, who has now arrived, who is supposed to investigate the murder of Thomas Malden.
After more and more details about Thomas Malden's death became known through the police and forensic medicine, and Max and Jordan were innocent, James was found in his former apartment, the building of which is now being completely renovated, and placed by Jordan, Woody and his colleague Annie Capra become. While Jordan wants to talk to James, Woody and Annie aim their guns at James a few meters behind them.
James is standing on the edge of the apartment, in which no windows have been installed due to the general renovation. Shortly afterwards, supposedly because James doesn't see a way out, he rushes through the opening in the apartment and ends up in the river behind the house. However, the body cannot be found.
Who actually killed Jordan's mother remains unclear at first.
The young detective Woody Hoyt gradually plays an increasingly important role in Jordan's life. He becomes her best friend and not infrequently saves her from dangerous situations. Jordan does not reciprocate his feelings for her for a long time due to her fears in a relationship, although after a while in an initially hopeless emergency, a kiss at the campfire occurs. After a while, especially when she loses contact with her father again and another woman, her colleague Devan Maguire, shows interest in Woody, Jordan realizes that he means more to her than she suspected. Her final feelings for him only become clear to her when Woody is shot and his life is in danger.
In the professional, but also in the private environment, Jordan is rarely on his own. Her colleagues Nigel, Bug, Lily, Trey and also her boss Garret are mostly behind her and support her as best they can. The occupation of the Forensic Medicine Institute has been welded together by successes, tragedies and defeats over the years and soon they no longer see themselves as mere work colleagues, but as a family in which everyone can rely on everyone.
Trey Sanders, who started at Boston Forensic Medicine shortly before her, also becomes a good friend to her. However, this leaves forensic medicine at the end of the first season. The reasons for the switch remain unclear.
At the end of the sixth season, Jordan's team is involved in a plane crash. While Bug still believes that he will never see his beloved Lily and his daughter Madeleine again or that he does not know when he will see them again, Jordan and Woody realize that they are still in love. In the end, the two kiss and everyone is found and saved.

Garret Macy
Garret Macy is a longtime pathologist and chief of forensic medicine. He usually seems reserved and tense, likes to stay professional at work and laughs very rarely and then only very cautiously.
Garret has been divorced from his wife Maggie for a number of years and they have a daughter named Abby.
His daughter is now in college but has occasional difficulties, including with her father. That's why Garret and his daughter initially have a tense relationship.
At the beginning of the series, his ex-wife lives with her new partner in the house where Garrets used to live with his wife. His ex-wife later separates from her new partner, and after a while Garrett begins a primarily sex-based relationship with his ex-wife.
With Garret, a second reason is the hope to get back together with his ex-wife. After a while, his daughter learns of this relationship, but shows understanding.
However, Garret later admits that this relationship is not fulfilling for him and that it will not fulfill his hope of getting back together with his wife.
At the beginning of the first season, Lily Lebowski also loves Garret. While she initially makes hidden hints, after a while she becomes more offensive and invites him on a date several times.
However, Garret does not address this at the beginning. Lily and Garret only go out a few times later, but there is no relationship or affair.
After Lily leaves Boston at the end of the first season for family reasons, but also because of the situation with Garret, he can persuade her to return and reinstall in a new professional position at the beginning of the second season. After Lilly clearly expresses her opinion on this situation to Garret at the beginning of the third season and accuses him of being a coward in this relationship, there is a kiss, which, however, has no further consequences.
He also had an affair with the prosecutor Renee Walcott for a while, whom he did not trust at first and which, as he later told her himself, he could not stand. Nevertheless, in a case in which both have a single room in another city and both of them are psychologically stressed, a night of love occurs.
Even after returning to Boston, the two continue their sexual relationship, but hide it from others.
This creates tension between the two of them again and again, as they meet privately, but often have different opinions in the professional environment and even argue about these aspects, even in the presence of their colleagues. It also happens that both have to investigate the cases with different views and motives, or Renee Walcott, in her role as prosecutor, has to investigate Garret and his employees.
Elaine Duchamps
At the beginning of the second season, by decision of the prosecutor Renee Walcott, the pathologist Elaine Duchamps is hired in the department of Garret Macy. While her personal motives and backgrounds remain unclear at first, Garret initially assumes that she should spy on him and uncover errors in his work. So Garret assumes he can be replaced by Elaine later.
Elaine Duchamps suddenly dies of poisoning over the course of the season, which also killed a security guard at the building. Peter Winslow, who is supposed to start there shortly afterwards, and later Garret Macy are also affected by the poisoning.
While Peter and Garret can be rescued by finding the cause and transporting them in a rescue helicopter, it's too late for Elaine. Peter is also the only one who is still affected by Elaine's death some time later, while the other staff get back to business.
Peter Winslow
Peter Winslow is a medic with wealthy parents who came into contact with various drugs through his ex-wife, went into withdrawal and later relapsed briefly. As a result of this drug addiction, he also lost his previous position as a medical examiner. Due to his past, Garret Macy initially distrusts him and questions Peter's motives.

From the beginning, Crossing Jordan lived mainly from the lively, cynical dialogues of the actors and the interesting and varied character representation of the characters: the main character is not designed as a classic heroine.
The conception of the criminological aspect of the series changed over time: In the first season, Jordan and at least one other character were involved in the "putting in ritual" in each episode, in which the reality and the imagined crime processes through flashbacks and special effects were mixed. From the middle of the second season onwards, however, the creators considered the idea to be exhausted and switched to a more varied derivation of the crimes.
Opening credits
During the first season the opening credits consist of short sequences in which Jordan Cavanaugh in particular can be seen in profile, partly as a person and partly only with his face. For this, a theme music with Irish sounds was used, which was written by Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman as part of the duo Wendy and Lisa especially for the series. In addition, the names of the main actors are listed at the beginning of the episodes.
With the second season, a new opening credits were introduced, which alternately consists of equipment or medical products and a short sequence with one main actor each. The individual sequences consist of short scenes in which the respective character can be seen in different situations. For each actor, the name is shown after its sequence, in combination with the respective device or medical product from the area of responsibility of the respective person. The name of the producer Tim Kring can also be seen in the last sequence with the addition 'Created by' together with a device from forensic medicine. A completely new theme music was used for this new opening credits, which can be assigned to the Pop area.
During episodes 2.13 to 2.15 there is a short sequence with Jordan Cavanaugh and her father instead of a seventh leading actor. The final shot with the name of the producer was then extended a little so that the timing was adjusted.
Trivia
- The title "Crossing Jordan" has multiple meanings in English : it means both "to get in the way of Jordan" or "to run across Jordan " as well as "to go over the Jordan " (to die).
- The start of the third season was delayed in 2003 because lead actress Jill Hennessy was pregnant with her son Marco. Even after the birth, she rarely appeared for the rest of the season due to motherhood, which meant that the other actors and their characters came to the fore for the remaining episodes. As a result, the individual characters in Crossing Jordan were illuminated and deepened above average. The success of the cast in keeping the series at good ratings even without the leading actress was widely praised by critics.
- Although Jerry O'Connell has had regular guest appearances as Woody Hoyt since 2002 (more precisely episode 01x11) and appears in practically all episodes of the third season, he only belongs to the regular cast from the fourth season.
- In the series there are always allusions or direct mentions of well-known films and series, such as B. the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in episode 3.04 or Quincy in episode 2.20.

- Episode 2.20 out of the blue is mainly about Det. "Woody" Hoyt. The episode takes place after a short sequence in pathology at the beginning of the episode briefly in Det. Hoyt's hometown and then mainly in Los Angeles . Jordan Cavanaugh only appears at the beginning, during a short sequence in the middle and in the final shot. No other main characters can be seen in this episode.
- In ep.2.20, out of the blue , Charlie O'Connell also stars as Det. Hoyt's brother. Charlie O'Connell is Jerry O'Connell's brother and has worked with him in the series Sliders - The Gate into a Foreign Dimension , where he also played his brother.
- Episode 3.03 Cold Traces shows some parallels to the movie The Twelve Jurors during the scenes in which Jordan Cavanaugh is called as a jury member and consults with the 11 other jurors . As in the film, Jordan is about looking at all the evidence before rashly convicting him and also questions the unequivocal evidential value of some evidence and statements. Although she initially agrees with not guilty , which irritates the other jurors, her demeanor gradually convinces other jurors. - The pathologist Trey Sanders , played by Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, can no longer be seen in the final episodes of the first season, although still named as the leading actor.
