Mahershala Ali
Mahershalalhashbaz "Mahershala" Ali (* 16th February 1974 in Oakland , California as Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore ) is an American actor . For his role in Green Book - A Special Friendship , he was awarded the Golden Globe in 2019 and again the Oscar for best supporting actor.
Life
His parents, a clergyman and an actor, named their son by his full first name Mahershalalhashbaz after Maher-shalal-hash-baz , a child of the prophet Isaiah from the Bible. Mahershala converted to Islam , changed his last name from Gilmore to Ali, and became a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community .
Ali, who was trained at New York University , has appeared in numerous plays, including The Merchant of Venice . Ali was part of the regular cast in the first season of Crossing Jordan - Pathologist with Profile , appeared as a guest on television series, for example in an episode of CSI: On the Trail of the Criminals , and starred in the mystery series 4400 - The Returnees as well as in Threat Matrix - Red Alert .
He also played a supporting role in David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button . In 2012 he appeared in the drama The Place Beyond the Pines on the big screen. From 2013 to 2016 he was the well-connected and quick-witted lobbyist Remy Danton in the US series House of Cards . In the first season of the Netflix original series Marvel's Luke Cage , he played the great adversary of the eponymous superhero.
For his portrayal of a Cuban immigrant and drug dealer in Barry Jenkins ' feature film Moonlight (2016), Ali won the 2017 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, along with numerous other prestigious awards, including awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association , the New York Film Critics Circle and the Critics '' Choice Movie Award and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In particular, his acceptance speech for the Screen Actors Guild Award 2017 caused a sensation (it was viewed over 230,000 times on YouTube alone), as it addressed Executive Order 13769 (often referred to as muslim travel ban ) issued immediately before by US President Donald Trump .
In early September 2017, it was announced that Ali would star in Season 3 of True Detective . In 2018 he took on the role of pianist Don Shirley in the drama Green Book - A Special Friendship , in which he stood in front of the camera with Viggo Mortensen . It earned him a Golden Globe Award in the Best Supporting Actor category and an Oscar in 2019 .
In the reviews of the third season of True Detective , Ali is often the focus, and not just because screenwriter Nic Pizzolatto originally didn't want to cast Sergeant Wayne Hays with a black actor. Mahershala Ali first had to convince him to give him the lead role. Stephen Dorff now falls into the role that was actually intended for Ali: that of the reliable and good-natured partner, reveals Carolin Ströbele in Die Zeit : "The cast is a great stroke of luck for the series, because Ali plays this policeman in his three phases Absolutely impressive. It really is the same man who portrays Sergeant Hays as a 30, 40 and 70 year old. Just by his posture and tension can be seen how in this life ambition has turned into disappointment and love into bitterness. ”His performance earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Actor - Miniseries or TV Movie .
At San Diego Comic Con 2019 it was announced that Ali would play the role of superhero Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film of the same name .
Ali was the model for Calvin Klein 's Spring 2017 men's underwear collection . 2019 he was appointed by Time magazine in its time 100 was added, the list of 100 most influential people of the year.
