Maher-Schalal-Hash-Bas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maher-Schalal-Hasch-Bas is the name of the second son of the prophet Isaiah , as he is mentioned in Isa 8 : 1-4  EU .

etymology

The name is Hebrew מַהֵר שָׁלָל חָשׁ בַּז maher schalal chasch bas and consists of four words. The two nouns שָׁלָל schalal “booty” and בַּז bas “robbery” can be interpreted safely . The word חָשׁ chasch is derived from the verb חושׁ chosch “hurry” and is either perfect or participle. However, since the symbolic action associated with the full name points to the future, the conception of the participle “a hurrying person” makes more sense. מַהֵר maher is an imperative and means "hurry!" The nouns can be understood as both subject and object, in the first case the meaning arises "The prey hurries, the looted property hurries", in the second, more likely case, " Hurry to the booty! One rushes to robbery. "

Name variants (German)

In Isa 8 : 1-4  EU , YHWH asks Isaiah to write the expression Maher-Schalal-Hasch-Bas on a large blackboard. Isaiah does this, the two priests Uriah and Zechariah serve as witnesses. Only then does Isaiah have a son, to whom he should give this name. The name is interpreted in relation to the Assyrian raids against Damascus and Samaria.
