The Solheim Cup is a team competition for female golf professionals, which is based on the model of the Ryder Cup and is held every two years between the best proettes in Europe and the USA.
The initiative for this event came from the US golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim . As with the Ryder Cup, it is a team tournament of the 12 best female golfers on both continents.
history
The first competition took place in 1990 and was held every even year until 2002 - with changing venues. After the Ryder Cup calendar was changed, the Solheim Cup switched to odd years from 2003 in order to avoid overlapping dates.
The tournament was held alternately in the USA and in Europe. At the moment 13 Solheim Cups have already been played. The USA is still the record holder with 8 wins compared to Europe with 5 wins. In 2013, the European team celebrated its first victory on American soil and was also able to defend its victory for the first time.
Game mode
The mode of competition has changed a little over the years. It was not until 1996 that 12 players started from both continents - in 1990 there were 8, 1992 and 1994 10 players each.
The game mode has been exactly the same as the Ryder Cup format since 1996. 28 games are played within a three-day match game competition.
The first two days of the competition include two game processions, with a total of eight classic foursome and eight four-ball best-ball encounters. On the final day, 12 individual hole betting games will be played.
In the classic four-way format, two team members take turns playing a ball until it is in the hole. In contrast to this are the four-ball best ball games, in which each player plays her own ball. At the end of the hole, the better result of the two teammates will be counted. For the single hole games, one American against one European. Each player plays her own ball for this round and achieves her own result.
The overall result is based on a point system in which a total of 28 points are awarded over three tournament days. A match won is awarded a whole point, each game that is tied after 18 holes is rewarded with half a point for both teams. The reigning Solheim Cup champion needs a total of 14 points to keep the trophy, while the other team needs 14.5 points to win the competition.
Qualification criteria
The 12 participants are selected as follows:
Qualification for the US team is based on a points system that includes the results of the LPGA tournaments over two years. The ten best players from this ranking qualify for the team. The last two places are given by wild cards given by the captain of the USA team. These are called Captain's Picks .
The qualification for the European team takes place via two different ranking lists, through which four of the twelve places in the squad are assigned. On the one hand, there is the “LET Points Ranking”, which results from the results of the players in the Ladies European Tour tournaments. The best four players in this ranking have a place on the team for sure. On the other hand, the four players who have collected the most world ranking points in the qualifying period and have not yet qualified through the Solheim Cup points ranking qualify. The last four places in the European Solheim Cup team are awarded by wildcards ( captain's picks ), which are awarded by the team's captain.
