Rafael Freyre is a municipality in the north of the Cuban province of Holguín . The town of the same name, Rafael Freyre, administrative seat of the municipality, is also known under the name of Santa Lucía . The place is dominated by the Rafael Freyre sugar mill of the same name.

In 1492 , Christopher Columbus landed in Bahía de Bariay , about 5 km north of the city, on his first trip to the New World to investigate a settlement of the Arawak (natives of Cuba). Previously he had only visited one uninhabited island in what is now the Bahamas .
