Mayarí is a city and municipality in the province of Holguín in Cuba .

The town's origins go back to 1757 when the first farms in this area were established. In 1879 the city became the administrative seat of the municipality.

The Sierra Cristal National Park is located partly on the territory of the Municipios Mayarí and partly in the neighboring Sagua de Tánamo . In addition, the municipality borders in the east on Frank País , in the south on the province of Santiago de Cuba and in the west on the municipality Cueto . The northern border forms the Bahía de Nipe .

The Municipio Mayarí has ​​a population of 102,354 and an area of ​​1308.3 km² (2012 census). The population density is 78.5 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The most famous sons of the municipality are the brothers Fidel and Raúl Castro , who were born on their father's estate in the village of Birán .

The name of the city is also the title theme of a famous song by Compay Segundo from 1940: "Voy para Mayarí" ("I'm going to Mayarí").
