Holguín [ olˈɣin ] is a city in eastern Cuba and the capital of the province of the same name . With 346,195 inhabitants (2012 census) it is the third largest city in Cuba.

Geographical location
Holguín is located about 500 km east of the capital Havana .
history
Holguín was probably named as San Isidoro de Holguín in 1545 after its Spanish founder, the officer García de Holguín. King Ferdinand VII granted the place city rights in 1752. In 1872 the city was temporarily liberated from the Spanish by Calixto García and from then on it was an important center in the wars of independence.
religion
The city is the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop . On November 14, 2005 , Pope Benedict XVI appointed to the new Bishop Emilio Aranguren Echeverría , who had previously been Bishop of Cienfuegos .

The city owns the airport Frank País an international commercial airport , the Holguin with Havana and various international destinations such as Frankfurt links.
From 1894 to 1956, Holguín was the terminus of the Gibara – Holguín railway .

The place has a large brewery , Cervecería Bucanero SA , which, in addition to the house brands Bucanero Fuerte and Bucanero Max, also brews the beers of the Cristal and Mayabe brands . The non-alcoholic, malt-containing soft drink Malta is also produced there.
