Compay Segundo (born November 18, 1907 in Siboney near Santiago de Cuba , † July 14, 2003 in Havana ; actually Máximo Francisco Repilado Múñoz ) was a Cuban musician .

Life

As a boy Segundo learned to play the guitar , bongos and clarinet . In 1934 he was hired by Ñico Saquito and performed in Havana. In 1948 he founded the Duo Los Compadres with Lorenzo Hierrezuelo and became famous within a few years. However, this fame was initially limited to Cuba. During his collaboration with Hierrezuelo he received his stage name Compay (from Spanish compadre ) Segundo (Spanish second ) because he sang the second voice in the duo.

In 1955 Segundo separated from Hierrezuelo in a dispute, worked for a cigar manufacturer and turned his back on music. It was not until 1970 that he began to make music again and played again on a seven-string guitar he had invented, the Armónico . In 1989 he traveled to the USA and introduced his new song, Chan Chan . Here a record company noticed him and signed him.

In 1997 the big breakthrough to the world-famous star came with the recording of the CD Buena Vista Social Club initiated by Ry Cooder . In 1999 Wim Wenders released the film Buena Vista Social Club , in which Segundo became the leading actor as a partner of Ry Cooder. The success was huge, and Segundo became a star at the age of 90. In Chan Chan's recording , Segundo also played the congas .

Segundo died on July 14, 2003 of complications from a kidney disease in Havana and was buried in the Cementerio Santa Ifigenia cemetery in Santiago de Cuba .
