Buena Vista Social Club is a documentary film by Wim Wenders from 1999 that focuses on the music project of the same name, Buena Vista Social Club . The film premiered at the 49th Berlinale on February 17, 1999 and received numerous film awards, including the European Film Prize in the Best Documentary Film category and an Oscar nomination . The first broadcast on German television was on December 30, 2001 on Arte . In 2017 a successor was published with Buena Vista Social Club: Adios .
action
Some of the musicians tell from their lives in the film. The focus is on reports on her career as a musician. They are also shown at studio recordings and three major concerts, two in Amsterdam and the third at Carnegie Hall in New York .
Interspersed between these scenes are shots that were taken while driving through Havana. The view of the camera clearly shows the morbid charm of the Cuban capital, with some dilapidated but lively streets.
The concert excerpts from New York are interrupted by film documents from the exploration tours of the Cuban artists in New York. Many of the artists traveled to North America for the first time in connection with the concert. The German version is subtitled, as are the lyrics of the songs.
background
The idea for the film developed from the original success of the CD: In 1998, after he had won the most important music award Grammy with the album Buena Vista Social Club, Ry Cooder traveled again to Cuba. He planned to record a solo album with the singer Ibrahim Ferrer . Cooder brought along a long-time friend, the German director Wim Wenders , and his film crew. This is how the extremely successful documentary came about during the recording of the album and during a few concerts afterwards.
It was one of the first films to be recorded entirely digitally; The cameras used were a digital Betacam as a steadicam (cameraman Jörg Widmer ) and several mini-DV cameras from Wim Wenders himself.
Reviews
The music critic Pedro de la Hoz of the Havana newspaper Granma explained that a sales-promoting legend had been created around film and CDs. From his point of view, the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club are not artists forgotten by the Cuban public, as has often been explained in connection with the film, but rather are all artists who had their place in the history of the Cuban music for sure.
The lexicon of international films judged that Buena Vista Social Club was "a film made using digital technology that overestimates the possibilities of the medium and does not focus on the old musicians, but on their American (re-) discoverers". "Clichés and superfluous sentimentalities" would reinforce the impression of "a listlessly filmed vacation video", in which "no (musical) sparks jump over and only the picturesque is marketed".
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
