Boundless (original title: Submergence ) is a romantic thriller by Wim Wenders , which is based on the novel of the same name by JM Ledgard . The leading roles were played by James McAvoy and Alicia Vikander . The film was staged in Europe and Africa from the end of March 2016 and celebrated its world premiere on September 10, 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival . On September 22, 2017, he also opened the film festival in San Sebastián . In Germany it was first seen on October 13, 2017 at the Hamburg Film Festival . The cinema release in Germany was on August 2, 2018.

The production benefits from the support of the Franco-German Funding Commission of the Film Funding Agency and the Center national du cinéma et de l'image animée . The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg is funding the film with 450,000 euros. Wenders' company Neue Road Movies is realizing the film in coproduction with Backup (Paris) and Morena (Madrid). The film was shot in the Babelsberg studio in Potsdam and in various other locations in Spain and France in Djibouti and on the Faroe Islands .
