Lisbon Story is a feature film by the German director Wim Wenders from 1994.
action
The sound engineer Philipp Winter follows the call for help from the director friend Friedrich Monroe to Lisbon. On site, however, he does not meet Monroe, but only various traces and mysterious clues from him. In search of Monroe, Winter makes friends, discovers the city in a very personal way, and succumbs to its charm.
reception
The film pays homage to the city of Lisbon on the occasion of its year as European Capital of Culture in 1994, but also to the cinema on its centenary. Wenders is honoring the old master of European auteur films, Manoel de Oliveira , with a cameo . Wenders also alludes to his film Der Stand der Dinge , which he shot here in 1981. So again Patrick Bauchau plays the director, and his name ("Monroe") is a reference to 1981, when he was called "Munro".
The film captures the charm of the alleys in the old quarters of Lisbon and gets along without clichés. He impresses with beautiful photographs of the city, with quiet humor and a calm, warm and poetic atmosphere. He lets the viewer follow the riddles about Friedrich Monroe and his film project, as well as the delicate romance between Phillipp Winter and Teresa Salgueiro , the enchanting singer of the Madredeus group . Their exclusive soundtrack made the group internationally more known and came under the title Ainda ( port. For "still") in various European countries into the charts, also in Germany. The Portuguese actor Henrique Canto e Castro as a hairdresser and the film director João Canijo as a petty crook appear in short supporting roles . The future director Marco Martins was an assistant during the shooting.
"Wim Wenders´ small but nice trip to Portugal is one of the most beautiful films of the year, with the most expressive film music for years (Madredeus) and the most successful sound design since Altman and Fassbinder."
Awards
In 1996 the film was nominated for the German Film Prize. In the same year Wim Wenders received a nomination for the Italian Nastro d'Argento as best director of a foreign film.
