Madredeus is a band from Portugal . It was founded in 1986 in Lisbon . Today Madredeus is an internationally known Portuguese group.

concept

Madredeus' style has its roots in traditional Portuguese music. The songs embody Portuguese myths of poetic heroism, melancholy and romanticism and are often located in the realm of world music . Most of the founding members have studied classical composition , plus musical influences from fado and progressive pop music. Band founder Pedro Ayres Magalhães describes the style of music as classical Portuguese music that has never been played before. According to his statement, the poetic texts and the sophisticated overall concept were always important, which was then revealed in the choice of special performance locations and the reserved but effective staging.

begin

At the end of 1985 Pedro Ayres Magalhães (from the pop band " Heróis do Mar ") and Rodrigo Leão (from the folk-pop band " Sétima Legião ") tried out new musical ideas together, which in 1986 led to the actual founding of Madredeus . According to their musical ideas, the two invited Gabriel Gomes (accordion player with " Sétima Legião "), Francisco Ribeiro (cello student at the National Conservatory) and, at the end of 1986, the young, inexperienced singer Teresa Salgueiro to join them. In 1993 guitarist José Peixoto followed.

In 1987 the first rehearsals began in the former Madredeus monastery in the Xabregas district of Lisbon . The monastery became a permanent meeting place for the band and gave it its name. At the end of July of the same year they recorded their first album there (" Os dias da Madredeus ", "The days of Madredeus"), which was released in December 1987 as a double album by EMI-Valentim de Carvalho. From 1988 the band began to play public concerts regularly, in Portugal and on cultural occasions also in Europe (e.g. Biennale, Bologna ).

Career

In 1989 they played for a week at the youth festival in the North Korean capital Pyongyang , in 1991 at Europalia in Belgium and the Portuguese Culture Week in Florence , and in 1992 at the World Exhibition in Seville . They first appeared in Brazil and Belgium in 1991, and in France, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, the Netherlands and Greece in 1992.

Her second album " Existir " was released not only in Portugal, but also in Belgium.

Their internationalization increased through appearances in more and more new countries: In 1993 they appeared for the first time in Germany, Luxembourg and Italy, in 1994 for the first time in Denmark and 1995 in the USA.

Rodrigo Leão left the group on July 2, 1994 for his solo career. Carlos Maria Trindade , a former member of the Heróis do Mar and studied musician , came for him . In 1996 G. Gomes and F. Ribeiro left the band, Fernando Júdice (bass) joined them.

In 1994, on the occasion of the European Capital of Culture , Wim Wenders shot his homage to Lisbon, " Lisbon Story " with Patrick Bauchau , Rüdiger Vogler and a guest appearance by the director Manoel de Oliveira . Madredeus also played along and provided the soundtrack (“ Ainda ”, “Noch”), which made it into the charts in some European countries, including Germany. The calm, intense sound of the acoustic songs by Madredeus in the film increased the band's international profile and brought them extensive tours and record sales for their new album " Espírito da paz ".

In 1995 the TV channel Arte shot a documentary about Madredeus in the Azores , in 1998 they performed at the opening of the world exhibition Expo 98 in Lisbon with the Catalan tenor José Carreras . In 2000 they contributed to the film about the Carnation Revolution , “ Capitães de Abril ” (German title: “ Nelken für die Freiheit ”), the title theme “ As brumas do futuro ” (“Future Twilight ”), written by Maestro António Victorino de Almeida . The telenovela " Os Maias " in Brazil used music by Madredeus.

In 1998 they appeared for the first time in Mexico and Israel, followed by Macau and Hong Kong , Istanbul and Buenos Aires , Helsinki and Belgrade , Angola and Cape Verde , they played at the Arctic Circle and at the Copacabana .

In 2002 two more Madredeus albums were released: one is “ Madredeus Electrónico ”, a collection of remix versions that international DJs have made of their songs. The other is " Euforia ", a recording by the group with the "Flemish Radio Orchestra" under the direction of Bjarte Engeset and arrangements by Maestro António Victorino de Almeida. The concert on April 4, 2002 in the “ Stadsschouwburg Bruges ” was released on CD and DVD and the band premiered in Mexico City in front of 10,000 spectators.

Madredeus in Aveiro 2005

The tour for the following album “ Movimento ” (“Movement”) lasted three years and took Madredeus to the Berlin Philharmonie , the Royal Festival Hall in London and the Olympia (Paris), among other places .

Upheaval

In 2004, Madredeus simultaneously recorded the album “ Um amor infinto ” (“A never-ending love”) and the 2005 release “ Faluas do Tejo ” ( faluas were transport ships that were especially typical of the Tejo River ) and went on their last World tour. On June 20, 2006 Madredeus played their music live in the Centro Cultural de Belém , to which the ensemble “ Lisboa Ballet Contamporaneo ” (“Contemporary Ballet of Lisbon”) danced a piece specially choreographed.

At the end of 2006 the band announced a sabbatical year for 2007 . Teresa Salgueiro left the band in November 2007. As a result, she released solo albums like other former band members. There remained only Pedro Ayres Magalhães and Carlos Maria Trindade, who continued the project without the characteristic singer, instead with a group of new musicians called " A Banda Cósmica ". The concept changed a bit, the atmospheric staging moved back a bit, the music became more technical, with wider instrumentation.

After three albums, the two declared the project " Madredeus & A Banda Cósmica " to be over after the completion of the trilogy and its weak sales figures.

In October 2011, Pedro Ayres Magalhães finally announced a new Madredeus formation for 2012, 25 years after the band's debut , with musicians from the “ Lusitânia Ensemble ”, the “ Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa ” and Beatriz Nunes, who was trained in jazz and classical singing . Concerts and a new album with new and newly recorded songs were announced. In April 2012, the new album Essência was released , which has since reached number 5 on the Portuguese sales charts.
