Maria Teresa de Almeida Salgueiro (born January 8, 1969 in Amadora ) is a Portuguese singer . Occasionally she also appeared in films, mostly as a singer, for example in the Wim Wenders film Lisbon Story .

Life

She was discovered in 1986 at the age of 17 by the band's founder Pedro Ayres Magalhães and Fernando Judice , the group's longtime bassist, in a small bar in Lisbon . With no musical experience and no vocal training, she shaped the style of Madredeus with her crystal clear voice .

Her compilation Obrigado , released in 2005, includes joint recordings with Madredeus, whose singer she was from 1987 to 2007. Further recordings were made with Angelo Branduardi , Caetano Veloso , Carlos Núñez and José Carreras between 1991 and 2005.

In 2007 she recorded a jazz-oriented album with the Septeto de João Cristal entitled Você e Eu , on which she presented songs by Brazilian artists Antônio Carlos Jobim , Ary Barroso , Dorival Caymmi and Chico Buarque . In 2009 it changed its name to Tereza Salgueiro. The first album under this name was released in the same year, Matriz , which she recorded with the Lusitânia Ensemble . On this album she interpreted court music and folk music from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The music of the oldest piece, Mi Madre Velida, comes from the Spanish King Alfonso X , the text from his grandson, the Portuguese King Dom Dinis . The album reached the top 10 of the Portuguese sales charts, as did their previous albums Obrigado , Você e Eu and La Serena .

In 2012 she reverted to the original spelling of her name Teresa . For the album O Mistério , released in 2012, she wrote all the lyrics and part of the music, played the piano on the instrumental O Início and was a co-producer. With her now permanent accompanying quartet (Carisa Marcelino: accordion, Óscar Daniel Torres: double bass, André Filipe Santos: guitar, Rui Lobato: drums, percussion and guitar) she recorded the album in the Convento da Arrábida monastery near Setúbal in August 2011. Musically, with the album, she came closer to the work of Madredeus in places, both in composition and arrangement, as well as in her singing.
