Life

Antônio Carlos Jobim, whose ancestors immigrated from France to Brazil in the 17th century, was born in the Tijuca district and spent his childhood in Ipanema . He learned to play the guitar in early childhood. From the age of 13 he learned the piano. He became a student of Lúcia Branco , who was considered the best piano teacher in Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s, and from 1941 Hans-Joachim Koellreutter , who had also taught other great Brazilian composers, was his teacher.

In 1946 Jobim began to study architecture, which he soon gave up to devote himself to music. He then played in various night clubs. It was here that the friendship with the pianist and poet Newton Mendonça began . He also worked in the studios of the music label Continental , where he also arranged and worked with the composer and conductor Radamés Gnattali .

Jobim's first major success was with Billy Blanco , with whom he recorded the song Teresa da Praia in 1954 . Two years later, his friend Vinícius de Moraes asked him to set his work Orfeu da Conceição to music , which was later adapted for cinema by Marcel Camus under the name Orfeu Negro . With this work Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes achieved their breakthrough; some classics of popular Brazilian music, such as Se todos fossem iguais a você or A felicidade, date from this period.

After that, Jobim was finally considered the most influential Brazilian composer of his time and one of the founders of Bossa Nova . His arrangements opened up new avenues and possibilities for popular music in Brazil. Traditional Brazilian song forms, such as choros or samba , were mainly mixed with jazz elements by the protagonists of the bossa nova . Jobim's pieces are mainly influenced by Pixinguinha , Chiquinha Gonzaga , Ernesto Nazareth , Sinhô , Ary Barroso , and Dorival Caymmi as well as the music of Claude Debussy and classical jazz music.

Jobim also had an international breakthrough in the 1960s.
