Jaques Morelenbaum (born May 18, 1954 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian cellist , composer , arranger , conductor and music producer .

life and work

Jaques Morelenbaum grew up in a musical family. His father is Henrique Morelenbaum , who worked as a violinist, conductor, general director and artistic director of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro . His mother Sarah Morelenbaum was a piano teacher, his brother Lucia Morelenbaum clarinetist of the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira , and his brother Eduardo Morelenbaum conductor, composer, arranger and clarinetist. Jaques Morelenbaum is married to the singer Paula Morelenbaum .

Jaques Morelenbaum spent a lot of time at the opera house as a child because of his father's work. He started playing the cello at the age of 12. He studied music in Brazil and later moved to the New England Conservatory of Music . His musical career began in the 1970s as a member of the progressive rock band A Barca do Sol . From 1984 to 1994 he played in the Nova Banda with Antônio Carlos Jobim , in shows, on tours and on recordings. He participated in the CD Antonio Brasileiro , which won a Grammy in 1996 for best Latin jazz performance.

After Jobim's death in 1994, Morelenbaum founded the Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum together with his wife Paula, Jobim's son Paulo (guitar and vocals) and Paulo's son Daniel (piano and vocals) . The repertoire built on the work of Antônio Carlos Jobim. He also directed his Cello Samba Trio with Lula Galvão and the percussionist Marcelo Costa.

Jaques Morelenbaum has worked with numerous Brazilian and international artists, including the Brazilian singer, songwriter and composer Caetano Veloso , the musician and composer Egberto Gismonti , the singer Gal Costa , the Japanese composer, pianist, actor and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto (among others in the Trio Morelenbaum² / Sakamoto), the Belgian composer Myriam Alter and the British musician David Byrne .

He created film music compositions, including with Antonio Pinto Central do Brasil , which in 1998 the Golden Bear of the Berlinale won for best film, and the music for the film O Quatrilho . Both films were nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film. Jaques Morelenbaum's discography comprises more than 400 records.
