The Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (Eng. Municipal Theater ) is a theater and opera house in Rio de Janeiro . It is considered one of the most beautiful and important opera houses in Brazil . The impressive building is located on Praça Floriano in the Cinelândia district in central Rio de Janeiro.

history

Construction of the Theatro Municipal began in 1905 under the direction of Francisco de Oliveira Passos , who was inspired by the splendid building of the Paris Opéra Garnier . On July 14, 1909, it was inaugurated by Brazilian President Nilo Peçanha . It was initially completed with 1739 seats, since then it has been rebuilt and renovated several times and today has 2361 seats. Ballet performances and productions of famous operas are regularly on the program .

Before the 100th anniversary , the theater was extensively restored, the total cost of which was around 64 million real (around 25.8 million euros ). The gilding of the facade and the dome was restored, and the candlesticks inside the theater were restored. The ceremonial reopening took place on May 27, 2010 in the presence of the President.
