Halmstad – Jönköpings Järnvägsaktiebolag was a Swedish railway company .

prehistory

On July 1, 1869, a meeting was held in Halmstad to investigate the possibility of building a railway line from Halmstad to a suitable point on Södra stambanan . The subject was discussed in Halmstad City Council. Halmstadt's mayor Thure Stockenberg, the doctor PO Sjöstrand, the dealer CO Schéle, the pharmacist Carl Fredric von Sydow and the dealer GE Falck commissioned Claes Adolf Adelsköld with the investigation of the planned railway line and its possible destinations as well as the preparation of cost estimates. At another meeting in December 1869, the end point of the line to be built was set in Jönköping .

In April 1870 it was decided to found a stock company to build the line. On December 9, 1871, the constituent general assembly took place in Gislaved , which was continued on January 15, 1872 in Halmstad. This is the official founding day of Halmstad – Jönköpings järnvägsaktiebolag (HJJ).

It was decided that the railway line should "run from Halmstad, past Oskarström , via Torup, past Lake Bolmen , to Värnamo and near Taberg to Jönköping or to another point on the Stambanan south of Jönköping, along with the Branch to Gislaved " . Billups & Makinson was commissioned with the construction. The track width should be the same as that of the state railway, and work should begin in June 1872. After four years of construction, operations to Jönköping were to begin, and the branch line to Gislaved was to follow a year later. The company issued bonds and shares for financing .

As a result, the concession for the Halmstad – Torup line was granted on September 13, 1872. Göteborgs Handelskompani took over the reinsurance for the public limited company . After the construction work had started, the further route from Torup had to be negotiated. At an extraordinary general meeting, the route was determined as follows: Torup - Kinnared - Smålandsstenar - Bredaryd - Värnamo. In addition, it was decided that the end point should be Nässjö instead of Jönköping. For the first time there was also the suggestion that the company should change its name to Halmstad – Nässjö Järnvägsaktiebolag . However, Göteborgs Handelskompani rejected this .

The building permit for the Torup – Lindenfors section was granted on September 9, 1873. As construction progressed, it became more and more difficult to obtain the necessary capital . This was achieved with the support of bank director André Oscar Wallenberg and so on September 1, 1877 public transport on the section between Värnamo and Halmstad could begin. Now the first proceeds have been generated.

After Makinson withdrew from the construction business, the responsible civil engineers resigned in 1878. Billups was very slow to continue construction. With the bankruptcy of Göteborgs Handelskompani further problems arose, so that in 1880 the contract with Billups had to be dissolved.

At least it was still possible to open the Värnamo – Lindenfors section to public transport on January 3, 1880. A new construction contract was negotiated with the engineer Carl Johan Jehander in May 1881. He completed the route from Lindenfors to Nässjö by the end of 1882 and on December 21, 1882 the entire route between Halmstad and Nässjö was opened to public transport.

Company bankruptcy

The next few years turned into an economic struggle for the railroad company, as the line made no profits. So it was decided at an extraordinary general meeting to sell the railway. On January 26, 1885, the company was declared bankrupt.

Halmstad – Nässjö Järnvägsaktiebolag

In the auction that followed, the railway was bought by the Stockholm Consortium under bank director Wallenberg for one million crowns . The Halmstad – Jönköpings Järnvägsaktiebolag was officially dissolved on June 17, 1885 in Halmstad. The new owners passed the statutes of the new company on June 26, 1885, and Halmstad – Nässjö Järnvägsaktiebolag (HNJ) was founded on June 29 . Wallenberg became the first chairman. This marked the beginning of the methodical establishment of a new railway company.
