Claes Adolf Adelsköld (born September 7, 1824 in Nolhaga , Alingsås , † October 1, 1907 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish railroad builder , architect , major , member of the Reichstag and writer .

Life

Adelsköld studied at the Chalmerska School of Applied Arts in Gothenburg and served at the same time in the Göta Artillery Regiment . In 1844 he was promoted to lieutenant in the Värmland military police regiment and in 1852 to lieutenant. In the same year he founded the Väg- och vattenbyggnadskåren (Trail and Hydraulic Engineering Corps). In 1849 he broke ground on the eight kilometer long Frykstadbanan in Värmland , the first Swedish public railway line . For the next 26 years he worked as a railroad builder, developing proposals for more than 300 miles of private railway lines in Sweden. He built more than 70 miles of it himself with all station buildings, bridges and port buildings. He was even responsible for the sewerage work and other tasks, partly also in Finland.

In 1857 he became president and in 1862 director of the northern and in 1865 also head of the central district of Väg och vattenbyggnad . Adelsköld held these offices until 1875. In 1865 he became the state representative at the Hjälmare Canal Society and in 1891 chairman of the Canal Commission.

From 1875 to 1893 Adelsköld was a member of the Swedish Reichstag , first for Västerbotten County and later for Blekinge County . He showed great interest in questions of defense and in 1892 brought a motion for combined land and sea defense in Parliament. 1878 was elected as a member of the grant committee and was 1877 and 1878 state auditor.

In 1867 he bought the Steninge Castle in Sigtuna . Social gatherings took place here, including with guests such as Prince Oscar (who later became King Oscar II ). He sold the castle again in 1873. Instead, he acquired Nolhaga Castle in Alingsås in 1876 , which is now a conference center. He was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1870, where he took over the chairmanship in 1891. From 1879 he also sat in the Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhetssamhället i Gothenburg . In 1887 he moved with his family to Stockholm in the new Adelsköldsche Villa in the Villastaden district .

Adelsköldsgatan near the train station in Alingsås was named after Claes Adolf Adelsköld .
