The Sorell Causeway is a road embankment in the southeast of the Australian state of Tasmania . The Tasman Highway (A3) runs over the dam and connects Midway Point at the tip of a peninsula in Pitt Water Bay with the town of Sorell on the north side of the bay .
From Hobart the Sorell Causeway in connection with the McGees Bridge opens up two important sights of Tasmania, the historic city of Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula and the picturesque east coast of the island.
history
During the colonization of Tasmania, the Richmond Bridge was the main crossing of the Coal River between Hobart and Sorell.
The Tasmanian government had determined early on that crossing the Pitt Water would significantly shorten the route from Hobart to Sorell. Planning ran into difficulties, but with the prisoners' labor in the background, one could concentrate one's efforts on building a dam. This was completed in 1872.
The Sorell Causeway is the second dam built in this way by convicts in southeast Tasmania and is similar to that of the Bridgewater Bridge over the Derwent River .
Conversions
Extensive repairs and alterations to the dam have been necessary in recent years. It was stated that a better tidal flow from Pitt Water and the Orielton Lagoon into the open sea had to be realized because blue-green algae spread in the standing water , which poisoned other sea creatures. Sluice gates were built into the lagoon and a system of new piles built to make longer sections of the dam into bridges.
