Alingsås is a town in the southern Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland . It is the main town in the municipality of Alingsås and is located on European route 20 about 50 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg .
Alingsås is located on the rather large lake Mjörn and on another, smaller lake, Gerdsken. In addition, the Säveån flows through the place.
The name of the place can be traced back to 1382. On September 21, 1619, Alingsås was granted city privileges by Gustav II Adolf .
The city is known for its picturesque wooden houses from around 1900 and the many inner courtyard cafés (there were 24 in 2006), which are always well attended in the summer.
The city is known for its annual festival, the Potatisfestivalen , which is celebrated in early summer. Everything revolves around the potato , which was introduced to Sweden in 1724 by Jonas Alströmer, who was born in Alingsås .
