The Mjörn is a lake in Västergötland , Sweden . The lake was first mentioned by name in 1350 under the name Mior .

location

Its 55 km² area is located in the municipalities of Lerum and Alingsås . Mjörn is the second largest lake in Västergötland, if you do not count the two large lakes Vänern and Vättern . Due to the unregulated water level, this sometimes varies by up to 2 m. About 60 islands and skerries of Mjörn have their own names.

The lake is fed by the lakes Ålandasjön and Anten to the north and the Säveån river , which runs through the lake and also forms the outflow at Norsesund .

fauna

The lake is home to a large number of fish and bird species. In addition to specific fish species such as alpine bullhead , lamprey and Mjörnforelle also there are perch , pike , perch , eel , bream , roach and other species in the lake.

Due to the relative proximity to the sea, there are also marine bird species on the Mjörn, including the great-tailed gull , oystercatcher and eider . Some of the islands in the lake are bird sanctuaries.

General

The lake is a popular leisure destination, with excursion boats you can visit the largest islands in the lake. In 1996 the Swedish fishing championship took place on Mjörn. At the beginning of September, the Mjörn Runt bike race takes place every year , with start and finish in Alingsås and more than 500 participants.
