Lake Hjälmaren is the fourth largest lake in Sweden with an area of 477 square kilometers . It borders the historic provinces of Västmanland , Södermanland and Närke . The Hjälmaren is a shallow lake with an average depth of 6 meters and a maximum depth of 20 meters. The largest tributaries are Svartån and the Kvismare Canal (Täljeån). The Hjälmaren drains over the Eskilstunaån into the lake Mälaren . In the 1880s the water level of the Hjälmaren was lowered by 1.9 meters and 190 km² were drained.

The largest island in the Hjälmaren is Vinön with an area of 4.5 km².

The provincial capital Örebro is located on the Hjälmaren .

Via the Hjälmare Canal , Sweden's oldest artificial waterway, there is a navigable connection to Mälaren and thus also indirectly to the Baltic Sea.

Hjälmaren is the setting for the 25th chapter of Selma Lagerlöf's novel The Wonderful Journey of Little Nils Holgersson with the Wild Geese .
