The Eskilstunaån is a 32 km long Swedish river in Södermanland . It connects the fourth and third largest lakes in the country with the Hjälmaren and the Mälaren and takes its name from the town of Eskilstuna .
The discharge from the Hjälmaren is 22 meters above sea level. , while the Mälaren at the mouth has a height of 0.7 m. The catchment area covers 4183 km². Eskilstunaån is the largest tributary of Lake Mälaren, its mean water volume at the outflow is 24 m³ / s.
The section through the town of Torshälla is also called Torshällaån , the one in front of the Hyndevadsström estuary .
Historically, Eskilstunaån was of great importance for the economic development of the Rekarne region . The medieval town of Torshälla and the industrial town of Eskilstuna were both founded on Eskilstunaån. The river was canalized as early as the 17th century, but the canal became unusable a few decades later. Today's Eskilstuna och Torshälla canal dates from the 19th century. Nowadays the river and canal is only partially navigable with small tourist boats because of the many immovable bridges that have been built since the 1950s.
