Rekarne is a historic landscape in the north-west of the Swedish province of Södermanland County . It corresponds roughly to today's Eskilstuna municipality and includes the agricultural area around Eskilstunaån between the lakes Mälaren and Hjälmaren in the southwest of the Mälar valley .

Rekarne means the lines or the edges in Old Norse and was first mentioned in writing as Reic in 1167 . According to one interpretation, the name could refer to the many terminal moraines or oser in the landscape, such as Tumboåsen , the Tumbo-Os, west of Eskilstuna. According to another interpretation, it is a ravine in Kälby near Skogstorp , south of Eskilstuna.

From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, Rekarne was divided into two Harden :

Then there are the independent towns of Torshälla (town charter 1317) and Eskilstuna (1659).

The name Rekarne has no administrative application today, but lives on in some place names, e.g. B. in the villages and former parishes of Husby-Rekarne and Råby-Rekarne , as well as in the Rekarne train station near Tumbo west of Eskilstuna, which is now only used as a pass .

The regional Sparkasse, Sparbanken Rekarne , and the Rekarnegymnasiet , a high school in Eskilstuna, are named after Rekarne .
