Svealandsbanan ( German  "the Svealandbahn" ) is a standard-gauge railway line in Sweden that runs from Södertälje syd övre through southern Mälardalen via Eskilstuna to Valskog near Kungsör .

It is named after the central Swedish part of Svealand . The route was inaugurated on June 9, 1997 and replaces Eskilstunabana , which was built in 1895 as Norra Södermanlands Järnväg and closed in 1994 .

Building history

The oldest part of the line is the Eskilstuna-Valskog section, which was completed in 1877 as part of the Kolbäck-Oxelösund railway by the Oxelösund-Flen-Västmanlands Järnvägsaktiebolag (OFWJ).

In 1895 the Norra Södermanlands Järnväg (NrSJ) built the line from Södertälje to Eskilstuna and in 1900 further to Mälarbaden . The NrSJ was nationalized in 1931 and electrified by Statens Järnvägar in 1936 .

The old railway line, called Eskilstunabanan since the 1990s, no longer had competitive travel times by the late 1980s. The main route also bypassed the town of Strängnäs , so that the Swedish state decided to build the Svealandsbana in the early 1990s.

In January 1994 the old line from Södertälje to Eskilstuna was closed in order to build the 79 km long new line. The construction was carried out at the same time as the expansion of European route 20 , which partly runs parallel to Svealandsbana. The railway line was completed after three years and inaugurated in June 1997. The track is remote controlled.

The Svealandsbana runs from Grundbro to Strängnäs over the old route from Åkers styckebruk to Strängnäs. From Eskilstuna to Rekarne the route runs together with the Kolbäck – Oxelösund route. This was expanded to two tracks in the 1990s from Eskilstuna to Folkesta.

The line was built on a single track, which caused capacity problems in peak traffic after a few years. Between 2007 and 2010 the line was therefore expanded with the three additional crossing stations Barva, Grundbro and Almnäs as well as the double-track section Ryssjöbrink – Nykvarn.

Between 2014 and 2018, the Strängnäs– Härad section was expanded to two tracks. For this purpose, the three kilometer long tunnel under Långberget and a new travel center in Strängnäs, which was built over the tracks, had to be built. The cost of the expansion, calculated at the 2012 price level, is around 1.8 billion crowns . The commissioning took place on 2018.

traffic

Contrary to the original plans, no new vehicles were used after the line went into operation. The traffic was mainly carried out by X2 trains. Originally, many trains ran between Hallsberg and Uppsala via Arlanda, Stockholm and Eskilstuna. After a time with locomotive-operated trains and Regina X52 multiple units , SJ X40 double-decker trains have been running on the route since February 2005 , and were used there for the first time. The night train from northern Sweden on the way between Stockholm and Gothenburg was run over the route for a timetable period.

SJ X40 in Eskilstuna

The route is mainly used by regional trains from SJ AB in cooperation with the regional company Trafik i Mälardalen (TiM) on the Stockholm C - Södertälje Syd - Strängnäs - Eskilstuna C (- Arboga ) line every hour.

Freight traffic on the route is limited. Nykvarn with a terminal for biofuels and the Volkswagen central warehouse are serviced daily, Åkers Styckebruk once a week. The through traffic includes a container train between Södertälje hamn and Västerås . The freight volume is greater north of Eskilstuna.

Future planning

In the more distant future, the entire line is to be expanded to double tracks, which is estimated to cost between 3.5 and 4 billion crowns.
