The SJ X40 series of electric multiple units is used in Sweden by the Swedish State Railways SJ AB .

The second double-decker multiple unit in the history of the Swedish State Railways after the Y3 belongs to the Alstom Coradia Duplex family . The railcars were mainly procured to replace slower locomotive hauled trains in Mälardalen .

history

The 42 multiple units were built by Alstom between 2004 and 2008 and run from Stockholm to Linköping , Eskilstuna / Arboga , Västerås / Örebro and Gävle / Sandviken and in 2006 to Gothenburg . A total of 16 two- and 27 three-part multiple units were procured.

The first units came to Sweden for test drives in February 2004. The first mission was originally planned in autumn 2004 on the Svealandsbana . Due to various problems, the planned operation only began in February 2005.

Furnishing

The double-decker vehicles originally had 85 seats per car body.

Wide doors enable passengers to change quickly, so that stopping times of 30 seconds at smaller and 60 seconds at larger stations are sufficient. The maximum speed is 200 km / h. The trains often run with one two- and one three-car unit each. The X40 have first and second class with almost the same equipment, they are equipped with air conditioning as well as signal amplifiers for cell phones and sockets at each seat, which are provided with radio connection. WiFi is available and has been free of charge since November 2013.

During the first year of operation there were technical problems with doors and air conditioning. Complaints from passengers concerned the insufficient space for luggage and the tight spaces between the seats and the narrow toilets . The trains are designed for regional commuter traffic , and many complaints come from passengers who use them on longer routes. The lack of luggage space is particularly noticeable on the Gävle – Stockholm – Linköping route, which is used by many tourists with heavy luggage to and from Stockholm / Arlanda Airport . For these reasons, the trains were only used briefly on the connection between Stockholm and Gothenburg. In several vehicles, rows of seats have now been expanded and replaced with luggage racks. As a result, there are only 78 seats left in this car.

Up to four units can be driven together in a train combination using multiple controls, regardless of whether they are two or three-car trains.

numbering

The individual vehicles of a train have different type designations. These are X40Z1 and X40Z5 for the end cars and X40Z3 for the middle cars. Different company numbers are coupled with one another, so that not all vehicles in a unit have the same number. The complete multiple unit always receives the number of the lowest component (33xx) as the so-called main number .

Special

Only a total of 42 train sets arrived in Sweden. The last of the multiple units had an accident while being transported to Sweden in Germany and could not be repaired.
