Menggatal is a city on the west coast of the state of Sabah in Malaysia . Menggatal belongs to the outskirts of the capital Kota Kinabalu and is assigned as a sub-district of the administration of Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (City Council Kota Kinabalu).

Demographics

The suburb was originally sparsely populated with indigenous Dusun . Recently, the city has seen a dramatic increase in population from immigrants from the Philippines and Indonesia. Although a significant number of them now have Malaysian citizenship, the proportion of illegal immigrants is high. Many of them live in the slums that exist not only in Menggatal, but also in many other parts of Sabah. According to the 2010 population statistics, Menggatal has 3868 inhabitants. The Chinese dominate with 43% of the population. The proportion of the Dusun has decreased to 17%, while the Bajau make up 15% of the population of Menggate.

history

From 1913 the North Borneo Chartered Company settled a smaller group of Lutheran Hakka Chinese from the province of Canton here at the instigation of the Basler Missionsgesellschaft . The total of about 600 people were distributed to Kudat , Menggatal, Telipok and Inanam and provided with a loan and tools. These beginnings were the basis for the still strong Chinese community of these four places.

Over the city

It is widely accepted that the name Menggatal refers to an itchy tree; the name of the city means "causes itching" in the Malay language.

The outskirts of Menggatal borders the ocean-facing campus of Sabah's highest educational institution, the University of Malaysia Sabah .

Menggatal consists of a few rows of shops, which are mainly built in concrete. Only three blocks of old wooden shophouses date back to before the Second World War. The owners of the shophouses are mainly of Chinese descent. The former Paramount Cinema , located next to the bus station, also houses several shops.

The city is connected to the center of Kota Kinabalu by the Jalan Tuaran (Tuaran Road) . The next suburb is Inanam .

Menggatal Agreement

The " Menggatal Treaty" is an agreement that the British government and the North Borneo Chartered Company on the one hand and the leader of the Mat Salleh Rebelion Paduka Mat Salleh concluded on April 23, 1898 in Menggatal. What is significant about the Menggatal Treaty is that it is the only treaty the British government has ever made with the common people of Sabah. At the same time, the agreement upgraded Mat Salleh's position within the chiefs, as it confirmed him as an important and influential leader. Only with the agreement did the British turn Mat Salleh, previously known as a "criminal", into a leader to be taken seriously and paved the way for recognition as a rebel against the British and later as a folk hero.
