Kuala Penyu is a small town in the Malaysian state of Sabah . It belongs to the administrative district of the same name ( Kuala Penyu District ) and is 100 kilometers south of the capital Kota Kinabalu . The city is part of the Interior Division area , which includes the districts of Beaufort , Keningau , Kuala Penyu , Nabawan , Sipitang , Tambunan and Tenom .

Kuala Penyu is located in the northwest of the island of Borneo on the Klias Peninsula (Klias Peninsula) on the southwest side of Kimanis Bay. The region was originally completely covered with mangrove swamps.

The name Kuala Penyu comes from a stone formation on the river bank (malay. Kuala ), which is reminiscent of the appearance of turtles (malay. Penyu ). In the early 1960s, the area was known as the sitompok , which in turn refers to a group of stones.

Demographics

According to the last census in 2010, the population of Kuala Penyus is 659 and consists mainly of Malay and Kadazan or Dusun Tatana, the largest ethnic group.

Infrastructure

Until February 26, 2012, Kampung Binsulok could only be reached by ferry from Kuala Penyu. A new bridge over the Sungai Sitompok now also connects the city directly to the coastal road to the north. This shortens the driving distance from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Penyu by around 25 kilometers.

Kuala Penyu is the gateway to the Pulau Tiga National Park . The 158 square kilometer marine park also includes the three islands of Pulau Tiga , Pulau Kalampunian Besar and Pulau Kalampunian Hence. The islands were formed in 1897 when a mud volcano erupted . Pulau Kalampunian Besar and Pulau Tiga were film locations and the setting for the US and UK versions of Survivor : Borneo , a reality show .

Kuala Penyu is known for its Tempurung Beach , Sawangan Beach and Sungai Labuan Waterfront .

"Pesta Rumbia" is a festival in honor of the countless sago palms that cover the area.
