Pitas is a city in the Malaysian state of Sabah . It belongs to the administrative district of the same name ( Pitas District ) and is 175 kilometers north of the capital Kota Kinabalu . The city is part of the Kudat Division area , which includes the districts of Kudat , Pitas and Kota Marudu as well as some offshore islands.

Pitas is located in the north of the island of Borneo on the western side of Marudu Bay .
Origin of name
Pitas is derived from the word nopitas . In the language of the local indigenous peoples, this word refers to an area whose access has been cut off by a river.
Demographics
The population of Pitas is 895 according to the last census in 2010 and consists mainly of Rungus , a subgroup of the Kadazan and Orang Sungai (which also include the Tambanuas ). As in many other cities in Sabah, there are significant numbers of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines , especially from Sulu and Mindanao , who are not recorded in the population statistics.
