The Sulu Archipelago ( Joló in Spanish ) is located in the extreme southwest of the Philippines between the southwest tip of Mindanao and the northeast tip of Borneo .
In the north is the Sulu Sea and south the Celebes Sea . The volcanic islands belong to the territory of the Philippines and consist of around 80 larger and hundreds of smaller islands. The largest are Basilan , Joló and Tawi-Tawi . The partly sea nomadic population of the islands represents the Islamic center (own name Bangsamoro ) of the otherwise predominantly Catholic Philippines. The Mindanao State University is an important educational institution .
The Spaniards occupied the archipelago from 1848 to 1851 and sold it to the United States of America along with the Philippines in 1898 .
Jolo and Basilan became known worldwide as the base of the terrorist Islamist group Abu Sajaf , which was founded in 1991 , when a group of tourists was abducted to Basilan in April 2000 . Other kidnappings were attempted by the doctor Nilo Barandino, who was himself kidnapped in 1992.
