Coordinates: 12 ° 12 ′ N , 123 ° 40 ′ E Masbate is an island , archipelago, and province of the Philippines .
It lies between the southeast tip of Luzon in the north, Leyte in the southeast, Cebu in the south and Panay in the southwest.
The province consists of the archipelago of the same name (a total of 39 islands), has an area of 4151.78 km² and has 892,393 inhabitants (as of August 1, 2015). The largest city is Masbate City with 95,389 inhabitants. The coastline of the province is approx. 968 km.
The largest inhabited islands in the province are:
- Masbate (3296 km², 435,200 inhabitants) in the south
- Burias (417.4 km², 76,400 inhabitants) in the north-west
- Ticao (332 km², 72,900 inhabitants) in the northeast
Other inhabited islands are Naro and Peña Island , which are located in the south of the province in the Visayas Sea .
The main industries in the province are corn and rice cultivation , fishing and cattle breeding .
Gold is mined on Masbate Island four kilometers southwest of the city of Aroroy . The mine has belonged to the Australian CGA Mining Limited since 2007 and is currently the largest such project in the country.
Administrative division
The province of Masbate is politically divided into 20 municipalities ( English : Municipalities ; Filipino : Bayan ) and one city. These in turn are divided into a total of 550 barangays .
The province has three electoral districts for election to the House of Representatives of the Philippines .
