La Union is a province of the Philippines in the Ilocos region on the main island of Luzon . The provincial capital is San Fernando . The current governor of the province is Victor Ortega.

location

The provinces of Ilocos Sur in the north, Benguet in the east and Pangasinan in the south border La Union . The northern border to the province of Ilocos Sur is based on the course of the Amburayan up to its mouth.

To the west is the South China Sea .

People and culture

786,653 people live in the 1,493 km² area (census August 1, 2015), resulting in a population density of 527 inhabitants per km². Ilokano is mainly spoken in the province .

93 percent of the population are Ilokanos, who mainly belong to the Roman Catholic faith. Smaller communities of Pangasinans live in the south as well as Igorots on the foothills of the Filipino Cordilleras and some Chinese in the cities.

economy

There are service, manufacturing and agricultural businesses in the province. The port of San Fernando is growing steadily into an increasingly large export port and the former American air base Wallace Air Station has been converted into a commercial and industrial area.

Tourism also plays an economic role. The beaches of Bauang and more remote ones in the north are popular with water sports enthusiasts.
