history
In 1573 the Spaniards reached the island with Juan de Salcedo , they were on the hunt for pirates and subjugated the inhabitants.
From 1600 Catholic missionaries worked on the island. After the annexation of the Philippines by the Americans , revolts against the new rulers broke out on the island in the 1930s. During World War II , the Japanese occupied the Catanduanes with the Philippines in 1942 . A regional resistance developed, which after years of fighting succeeded in February 1945 to overcome the Japanese occupiers.
With the entry into force of the Commonwealth Act No. 687 on October 16, 1945, Catanduanes became independent from the province of Albay and since then has formed a province of its own with a few other but very small islands.
