San Miguel Island is a Philippine island in the Albay Province . It is located about 4 km off the coast of the Bicol Peninsula and, together with Rapu-Rapu , Cagraray , Guinangayan and Batan Island, separates the Gulf of Lagonoy from the Gulf of Albay in the western Philippine Sea . San Miguel Island is administered from the city of Tabaco City . On the island are the barangays Agnas, Hacienda, Rawis, Sagurong and Visita, these are described as village and in 2007 had a population of 12,971 people. The population lives mainly from fishing , in the coastal plains there are also smaller agricultural areas.

The island has the shape of a lens that is oriented in a west-east direction. The topography of the island is characterized by a hilly terrain. The coastline of the approximately 10 km long and 4 km wide island is characterized by sand and gravel beaches as well as basalt formations . The vegetation of the island consists of a partially dense tropical rainforest vegetation , which has a very original character. In front of the Barangay Sagurong , the 2.25 km² San Miguel Island Marine Fishery Reserve was established in 1995 by the local government, in cooperation with NGOs and Bicol University . This was named one of the best managed marine reserves in the Philippines by Philreefs in 2001. However, the coral reefs of the marine reserve were badly damaged by typhoons Milenyo and Reming in 2006 .

Ferry connections to the island exist from the port in Tabaco City. The crossing takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
