Batan Island is a Philippine island in the Albay Province . It is located about 12 km off the coast of the Bicol Peninsula and, together with Cagraray , Guinangayan , Rapu-Rapu Island, separates the Gulf of Lagonoy from the Gulf of Albay in the western Philippine Sea . Batan Island is administered from the Rapu-Rapu metropolitan area . There are 21 barangays of the municipality on the island , these are described as village-like and in 2007 had a population of 20,539 people. The population lives mainly from fishing , in the coastal plains there are also smaller agricultural areas. There are abundant coal deposits on the island, most of which are illegally mined.
The island has an elongated, irregular shape and is oriented in a west-east direction. The topography of the island is characterized by a mountainous terrain that rises in the interior of the island at Mount Vizcaya to 395 meters above sea level. In the coastline of the island, which is about 19 km long and about 5.5 km wide, deep bays protrude into the interior of the island. The coastal formations are characterized by sand, gravel beaches and basalt stone formations. The island's vegetation consists of dense tropical rainforest vegetation, which is endangered by mining activities. The Minaroso cave is located on Batan Island and was used as a burial site by the earlier inhabitants.
There are ferry connections to the island from the port in Legazpi City and Sorsogon City . The crossing takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Another island of Batan is in the northernmost province of Batanes in the Philippines .
