Masbate Island is located between the Sibuyan Sea in the west and the Visayas Sea in the south; it is one of the three main islands in the Philippine province of the same name, Masbate .
At the last census (2000) there were 435,200 inhabitants on an area of 3296 km².
The Gulf of Asid protrudes into the island from the south , in which the islands of Chico , Naro and Peña are located. In the northeast is the San Bernardino Strait , in the southwest the Jintotolo Canal and behind it the island of Panay . To the northeast lies the smaller neighboring island of Ticao , in the northwest of Burias and East Samar .
The largest city with more than 80,000 inhabitants is Masbate City on the east coast.
In the northeast - near Aroroy - is currently the largest gold mine in the country, which was operated from 1980-1994 by the Atlas company and has been indirectly controlled by the Australian company CGA Mining since 2007 . The mine produced 150,000 ounces of gold in 2009 . In 2012, CGA Mining was taken over by the Australian company B2Gold . 157,591 ounces of gold were mined again in 2016 and the 2017 production is only slightly lower.
