The San Bernardino Strait is a strait between the Philippine island of Samar and the Bicol Peninsula , in the southeast of the largest Philippine island of Luzon .
It connects the Samar Sea in the southwest with the Philippine Sea in the northeast. At the narrowest point it is less than 20 km wide. In the south are the islands of Calintaan, Capul , Dalupiri and Burabud, in the northeast, among others, Langub and San Bernardino Island . The Naranjo Islands are located at the transition from the Samar Sea to the estuary .
In 1543 the expedition of Ruy López de Villalobos reached the Philippines and traveled the San Bernardino road.
During World War II , a Japanese fleet ran through the strait on its way to the Battle of Samar as part of the sea and air battle in the Leyte Gulf .
