San Bernardino Island

San Bernardino Island is the name of an island in the Northern Samar Province of the Philippines . It is located about 51 km off the north coast of the island of Samar , at the northeast entrance of the San Bernardino Strait . The island has an area of a few hectares and is administered by the municipality of Biri . San Bernardino Island is surrounded by some smaller islands and rocks, so the name San Bernardino Islands is also used. The island rises 29 meters above sea level.

The island is an important navigation point for the entrance to San Bernardino Street, for this reason a 12 meter high lighthouse was built on the island . The lighthouse was repaired at the end of the 1990s and equipped with three new Fresnel lenses and for automatic operation.

The Chinstrap Tern ( Onychoprion anaethetus ), which is rare in the Philippines, breeds in a large colony on the island, as the waters around the island are very rich in fish.
