Higatangan Island is the name of an island in the Biliran Province of the Philippines . It is located about 4 km off the north coast of Leyte Island , 17 km east of Carnaza Island and 12 km west of Biliran Island at the transition from the Samar Sea to the Visayas Sea . The two barangays Libertad and Mabini are located on the island and are administered by the greater municipality of Naval .
Higatangan Island was created by tectonic forces and has a rounded rectangular shape. The highest point is the 46 meter high Marcos Point, it was named after the former President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos . He had spent World War II on the island. The island is covered with dense, tropical vegetation and despite the white sandy beaches, the exotic rock formations and the shallow, clear waters, it has so far been spared from mass tourism.
Maripipi Island can be reached from Naval Township Port and the ferry ride takes approximately 45 minutes.
