Katrin Thomas

Katrin Thomas (* 1963 in Bonn ) is a German photographer , artist , director and professor with numerous international photo publications and exhibitions. In 2011 Katrin Thomas became a lecturer for photography at the BTK, and since 2012 she has held a professorship for photography at the Berlin Technical Art College .

life and work

Katrin Thomas, born in Bonn in 1963 , first studied visual communication at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences from 1983 to 1990 before she assisted the Spanish designer Javier Mariscal in Barcelona from 1990 to 1991 and worked for McCann Erickson and Ogilvy & Mather Focus in Frankfurt am Main worked as a designer. She then continued her studies with a Fulbright Scholarship for Artistic Photography and Film at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena , California . Another scholarship from the Berlin Cultural Senate followed.

From 1992 onwards she worked as an artist with art projects up to work in the field of film and video in Los Angeles . There are four short films from this time. Among other things, the short films "Choice" and "Five Naturals". She then worked on book and exhibition concepts in the City of Los Angeles. The short film “A Tale” has its world premiere at the EntreVues Belfort 2014 international film festival and wins the Grand Prix Best Short Film.

From 1993 Katrin Thomas worked as a freelance photographer in New York . Her photographs have been published in Cosmopolitan , New York Times Magazine , FAZ Magazin, Spiegel , Interview , Spin , Vogue , Rolling Stone Magazine, Zeit Magazin and in the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and shown in numerous group exhibitions in Europe and the USA . She received several awards, including the 1998 Otto Steinert Prize of the German Society for Photography .

From 1995 to 1998 he completed a diploma course in painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .

Since 2001 she has worked as a lecturer at various universities in Germany and abroad, including as a guest lecturer at the International Center of Photography in Midtown Manhattan , ( New York City ), the School of Visual Arts in New York, the Zurich University of Art and Design and the Art Academy Berlin-Weißensee. From 2007 to 2010 she was visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts . In 2011 Katrin Thomas became a lecturer for photography at the BTK, and since 2012 she has held a professorship for photography at the Berlin Technical Art College .

Katrin Thomas lives and works in Berlin .
