The Berlin Technical Art Academy (BTK, spelling BTK - University of Design ) was a private, state-recognized university with locations in Berlin , Iserlohn and Hamburg .

It was a private university of applied sciences and was founded in the spring of 2006 out of the Hamburg and Berlin Technical Art Schools as well as private academies for design to train designers in the interface of design, art and new media. The founders were Cyrus Khazaeli (designer and founding rector), Hans-Hendrik Grimmling (painter), Matthias Leupold (photographer and rector from 2007 to 2014) and Claus Bennefeld (businessman).

BTK was taken over by the American education group Laureate Education Inc. on October 13, 2011 .

In March 2017, the BTK was taken over by the Hochschule Business and Information Technology School (BiTS) by way of a merger . The BiTS was renamed University of Applied Sciences Europe shortly afterwards. This has been part of Global University Systems (GUS) since April 2018.

The former BTK is now the campus of the University of Applied Sciences Europe .

The seven-semester Bachelor's degree programs conclude with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and provide training for jobs in agencies, publishers and companies. A practical or semester abroad is completed in the fifth semester.

State recognition and accreditation

The BTK was institutionally re-accredited in 2014 by the German Science Council, subject to certain conditions . The courses were accredited by the Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency ZeVA with regard to the Game Design course subject to conditions, otherwise without conditions.

Before the takeover, the bodies for academic self-administration of the BTK consisted of the Academic Senate and the Advisory Board of the university.

internationalization

The BTK offered the Bachelor's degree programs in Photography (BA), Communication Design (BA), and Game Design (BA), as well as the two Master’s degree programs in Media Spaces (MA) and Photography (MA) in English. There was also an English-language "summer school".
