Hans-Hendrik Grimmling (born July 13, 1947 in Zwenkau , Leipzig district , Saxony ) is a German painter . From 2006 to 2017 he taught as a professor at the Berlin Technical Art Academy .

Life

After graduating from high school and serving in the army, Grimmling initially worked as a transport worker, stage worker and assistant set designer. From 1969 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden , a year later he switched to the University of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig . There he was a student with Werner Tübke and Wolfgang Mattheuer . After graduating in 1974 Sprite was three years long master class at Gerhard Kettner at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. Then he worked as a freelance painter in Leipzig.

Grimmling was one of the co-initiators of the legendary 1st Leipzig Autumn Salon , a semi-legal exhibition in the Messehaus on Leipziger Markt in 1984, which was classified as “counterrevolutionary” by the GDR authorities. The consequence and consequence was that three painters from the “Herbstsalon” left the GDR: Günter Firit , H.-H. Grimmling and Lutz Dammbeck .

Grimmling left for West Berlin in 1986 , where he has lived and worked ever since. From 2001 he taught as a lecturer at the Berlin Technical Art Academy, from 2006 to 2017 as a professor.

Timeless metaphors determine his painting . Grimmling describes memory as well as the present with symbols from “bird”, “knot”, “cross” and “sail”. Characterized by a strong rhythm, with a clear dominance of the color black, his work is one of the great positions of the European avant-garde . While his early pictures, taken in Leipzig , showed people who have fallen , locked up , tormented , stumbled , people with black wings and black birds , today it is still dramatically knotted forms, human body parts that are fatally entangled in cross and sails.
