Laureate Education is a US-based private education company founded in 1998 as Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc. In 2004 the name was changed to Laureate Education .
The holding company operates 75 private universities and colleges in 30 countries (as of 1/2014). Laureate Education is also active in tele- education and in 2001 earned 41% of the Walden University Distance Learning University .
The company Laureate, which was listed until 2007, was taken over by a consortium of holding companies (value including around 700 million dollars in debt: 3.8 billion US dollars). The group of investors was led by the company's CEO, Douglas Becker. The consortium included Kohlberg Kravis Roberts ; Citigroup Private Equity; SAC Capital Management , SPG Partners; Bregal Investments ; Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec ; Sterling Capital; Makena Capital; Torreal, and Southern Cross Capital. The hedge fund Soros Fund Management also acquired shares in the company.
