The ICP emerged from an initiative by Cornell Capa , the brother of the well-known photographer Robert Capa , who set up the Fund for Concerned Photography in 1966 to keep the public's awareness of the documentary work of his brother and other colleagues such as Werner Bischof and David Seymour . In 1974, out of the need to better present the existing work, the ICP was established in the Willard Straight House on Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue .

Due to increasing space problems due to the constant growth of the archives and exhibitions, a second gallery was opened in 1985, the ICP Midtown. At the same time as the opening of a new 17,000 m² gallery on Avenue of the Americas (1133 at 43rd Street) in 2000, a cooperation with the George Eastman House in Rochester was agreed, which made one of the largest photographic collections in the world accessible.

Today there are over 100,000 photographs in the museum's permanent exhibitions. The focus is on documentary photography from 1930 to the end of the century. Numerous works by W. Eugene Smith , Henri Cartier-Bresson , Robert Capa and Lisette Model are exhibited in the museum, while new acquisitions by contemporary artists include Carrie Mae Weems , Justine Kurland and Tomoko Sawada .

ICP School

The School of the International Center of Photography (ICP School for short) was reopened in 2001 in the Grace Building in Manhattan and is one of the most renowned photography academies in the world. In addition to two Master of Arts degrees, public photography courses are also offered there and social community projects are carried out. In total, more than 5000 students study at the ICP School every year. More than 15,000 monographs and 75 journal series are publicly available in the ICP reference library.

Publications

In 2003 the ICP started a joint venture with the well-known Göttingen art book publisher Steidl . Steidl-Verlag acts as the publisher and printer, while the ICP provides the extensive collection as a resource and handles the content processing. In this way, four to six publications appear each year; Monographs, art books and exhibition catalogs.
