Rapu-Rapu Island is a Philippine island in the Albay Province . It is located about 23 km off the coast of the Bicol Peninsula and, together with Cagraray , Guinangayan and Batan Island, separates the Gulf of Lagonoy from the Gulf of Albay in the western Philippine Sea . Rapu-Rapu Island is administered by the Rapu-Rapu metropolitan area of the same name . There are 13 barangays of the municipality on the island , these are described as village-like and in 2007 had a population of 12,107 people. The population lives mainly from fishing , in the coastal plains there are also smaller agricultural areas. A gold mine has been in operation in Barangay Malobalo, in the east of the island, since 1936. This has met with little acceptance from the local population and is a trigger for public protests.

The island is shaped like a lens that faces west-east. The topography of the island is characterized by a mountainous terrain that rises in the interior of the island at Mount Binanderahan up to 600 meters above sea level. The coastline of the approximately 21 km long and 9 km wide island is characterized by sand, gravel beaches and basalt stone formations. The vegetation of the island consists of a dense tropical rainforest vegetation, which has a very original character. Numerous species of Philippine flora and fauna can be observed on the island , such as flying foxes , numerous species of birds, insects and snakes.

There are ferry connections to the island from the port in Legazpi City and Sorsogon City . The crossing takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
