Legazpi ( Filipino : Lungsod ng Legazpi ; Bicolano : Ciudad nin Legazpi ) is a Philippine city in the province of Albay , of which it is the capital. Legazpi is based on the number of inhabitants - but not on the area - the largest city and the center of the Bicol region . The city is located in the geographical center of the peninsula between the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate . Legazpi is also the southern terminus of the Philippine National Railways main south line and has a seaport on the Gulf of Albay .
The city is the seat of the Legazpi diocese .

history
Legazpi is named after the Spanish conquistador and conqueror of the Philippine islands Miguel López de Legazpi , whose family came from the Spanish city of Legazpi in the province of Guipuzcoa .
Legazpi was founded by settlers from the Barangays Sawangan in the domain of Gat Ibal, ruler of Albay. At that time the population lived in small groups of nipa and rattan huts in a deep and swampy country. This was called Banuang-gurang or Binanuahan, which means something like "old small town" or "place where a small town was built".

Regular events
The Ibalong Festival is one of the famous non-religious festivals in Bicol and has been held every October since the 1990s, at the same time as the Legazpi Port District Fiesta. Throughout May, the Albay Magayon Festival is celebrated in Legazpi.
Economy and Infrastructure
Legazpi City is the economic center of the Bicol region. To boost economic development, the city's efforts are focused on developing the Bicol Regional Agro Industrial Center (BRAIC) and a Special Economic Zone .
Currently the largest shopping mall in the Bicol region is the Pacific Mall Legazpi in the center of Landco Business Park, which is owned by Landco Pacific Corporation .
The LCC Central Mall Legazpi shopping center is older and belongs to the largest retail company in the Bicol region, the Liberty Commercial Center (LCC), based in neighboring Tabaco City .
The town hall and various public offices are located in the Albay district, which was the capital of the Albay province before the merger with Legazpi. There are also bistros there that are open late into the night. Some of the shops are open around the clock.

The Legazpi Airport has a check in 2,280-meter runway and can international flights. Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Cebu Pacific fly from Manila to Legazpi twice a day. Cebu Pacific flies Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft , while PAL uses Boeing 737s . Air Philippines flies three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).
There are bus connections between Legazpi and Manila. Travel time is between 11 and 13 hours, three hours less on the newly constructed Andaya Highway . More than ten bus companies travel to and from Manila every day.
In addition, there is a railway connection between Manila and Legazpi of the Philippine National Railways , which resumed operations in the late 1990s after a thorough renovation of the section between Naga City and Legazpi City.

Legazpi is the academic center of the Bicol region.
