Cebu Pacific is a Philippine low-cost airline based in Pasay City and based at Mactan-Cebu Airport .

history

Cebu Pacific was founded in March 1996. The owner is JG Summit Holdings. As a low-cost airline, it competes with Tiger Airways from Singapore or AirAsia from Malaysia. In 2007, Cebu Pacific carried 4.46 million passengers on the Philippine domestic routes, corresponding to a market share of 43%, for the first time more passengers than the leading PAL . In 2008 the market share in passenger traffic rose to 45.6%; In 2010 it was 48.2%. Also in the freight Cebu Pacific has steadily expanded its market share in recent years and in 2010 was 51.6%.

In March 2010, Cebu Pacific, like all other airlines in the Philippines, was placed on the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union , and flight operations in the EU were therefore prohibited. The European Commission justified this step with the fact that the authorities responsible for the supervision of the air carriers licensed in the Philippines were not sufficiently in a position to remedy safety deficiencies. On April 14, 2014, Cebu Pacific was removed from the European Commission's blacklist after the company met common safety regulations through internal programs.

In March 2010, Cebu Pacific introduced so-called light fares , particularly low ticket prices for passengers who only carry hand luggage and therefore do not check in any further luggage. An IPO was initially planned for 2008, but was postponed indefinitely due to the financial crisis . In 2010 these plans were resumed and on March 24, 2010 the listing for an initial public offering was followed by the Philippine Stock Exchange . The banks JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank were entrusted with the placement of shares on the international markets . The shares were issued and listed on the PSE at the end of October 2010. At the time of the IPO, 186.6 million shares were sold, which corresponded to 30.4% of all available paper. Cebu Pacific was able to collect 23.3 billion PHP and thus achieved a higher revenue than any other low-cost airline.

Cebu Pacific is a "point-to-point carrier", which means that the airline does not offer any linked transfer connections within the route network. After Cebu Pacific was initially known for the punctuality of its flights, this characteristic has diminished massively in the following years. Cebu Pacific became known for its flight delays or cancellations. According to media reports in April 2009, around a third of the flights were delayed. According to Cebu Pacific's own information, the punctuality rate has improved from 68.7% in January 2009 to 91.7% in September 2010, but has deteriorated somewhat in the following months, so that it then averaged 80%. In 2011 and 2012, the punctuality rate fell to 62.2% and has fluctuated very strongly since then. After the punctuality was above 80% again at the beginning of 2013, it fell again to 64.5% in April 2013. In the information to the passengers waiting at the airports, the reason for the delays is often the overcrowding of the airspace at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.

In 2012, Cebu Pacific announced that further new A320s and A330s would be added to the fleet in 2013/2014 . Cebu Pacific received the first new A330 in June 2013 and now also serves long-haul routes.

In January 2014, Cebu Pacific took over 100% of the shares in Tigerair Philippines . In the course of this, a closer cooperation was agreed with the Singapore- based Tigerair , which enables both companies to optimize their flight routes and expand their networks. Tigerair Philippines initially continued to operate under the Tigerair brand name. In May 2015, however, the name was changed to Cebgo . Both the company name and the color scheme of the new company logo clearly indicate that it belongs to the parent company Cebu Pacific.

Destinations

From its hubs, Cebu Pacific serves numerous destinations in the Philippines, cities in Australia , Asia and the Middle East as well as Guam in the Pacific.

Incidents

  • On February 2, 1998, a Douglas DC-9 crashed into a mountain while approaching Cagayan de Oro with 104 people on board. Nobody survived (see also Cebu Pacific Flight 387 ) .
  • On the evening of June 2, 2013, an Airbus A320-200 missed the runway at Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City in bad weather and came to a stop off the runway with the nose wheel buckled. All 165 passengers on board and the crew members survived the accident without major injuries. As a result of the incident, Davao City Airport remained closed to commercial air traffic for two days until the accident investigation and the recovery of the aircraft were completed. According to the civil aviation authority of the Philippines CAAP, a pilot error was the cause of the accident. The two pilots were then withdrawn from their flight permits for three or six months due to misconduct, in particular the failure to undertake an immediate emergency evacuation.
